Do you scan the carotid arteries? |
|
|
No, the Coronary Artery Scan specifically scans the heart region for coronary calcification.
Imaging of the carotid arteries (located in the neck) is generally performed using
other methods. See your personal physician regarding possible tests regarding stroke. |

What is the correlation between coronary artery disease and stroke? |
|
|
Both stroke (cerebral vascular accident) and heart disease have many similar risk
factor associations and both can be caused from the atherosclerotic process. The
difference lies in the regions that they affect: obstructions in the coronary arteries
may cause myocardial infarction (heart attack) while obstructions in the carotid
artery may cause stroke (affecting the central nervous system). Although both diseases
have coinciding risk factors, atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries does not necessarily
mean that atherosclerosis will be present in the carotid arteries. Please follow
up with your personal physician to discuss any concerns you may have. |
